Call to Action
by Sherri Jackson, Communications Coordinator, SGG
Over the course of the past few years, the main argument for postponing investment in sustainable infrastructure and a greener economy has been cost. Repeatedly we have heard that Canada cannot afford the massive investment required to green the grid, retrofit our buildings, improve our public transit systems, and transition workers to a new, greener economic model. Now, with over 150 billion dollars being spent to mitigate the crisis brought forward by COVID-19, that excuse is no longer valid.
The money will be spent, and now is the time to ensure that this massive stimulus does not repeat mistakes of the past. It is imperative that those of us who see a new path forward express our concerns and our expectations for what we invest in, who we support, and how we hold accountable those who benefit from these expenditures.
Right now, our government is determining where this money will go. It is split between following staid paths and known entities, like bailing out the oil industry and multinational corporations, and its commitment to taking action on climate change. The lobbyists are making a strong push for business as usual, with their hands out. We cannot afford to remain silent and polite. This is our opportunity to ensure our government makes the right decisions to secure the future we envision.
Now is the time to rethink how we got here, and what we can do differently.
Your voice matters. There is a chance now to make a smart, massive investment in a new, sustainable economy, that balances social justice, the environment, and profits as equally important. A chance to invest in infrastructure, retrofits and retraining that can put us on the right track. To implement a Green New Deal for Canada that achieves those objectives. That won’t happen without a strong, united voice for change.
Write or call to make sure your voice is heard.

"Hello, my name is ___ from [town]. I am calling in support of an economic stimulus that focuses on sustainability and ensures that this money promotes a greener economy, a just society and an investment in a healthier future. Now is time to green the grid, to transition energy workers and agriculture and, invest in building retrofits as a way to stimulate the economy, provide millions of good paying jobs, and meet our Paris Accord targets. We have an opportunity to transition our economy for a healthier, stronger, fairer future for all of us. Please invest wisely so we don't recreate the mistakes from our past."
